Width: This first number is the width of the tyre in millimetres, measured from one sidewall to the other. Why it matters: A wider tyre (like 285mm) provides a larger "footprint" on the road, which generally improves grip and stability for larger vehicles and SUVs.
Aspect Ratio: This number represents the height of the tyre’s sidewall as a percentage of its width. Why it matters: A "70" means the sidewall height is 70% of the width; higher numbers indicate a taller, "meatier" tyre that offers more cushion and comfort, especially when driving off-road or on bumpy surfaces.
Construction (R): The letter "R" stands for Radial, which describes how the internal fabric cords of the tyre are layered. Why it matters: Radial construction is the modern standard for almost all passenger vehicles because it allows the tyre to flex and grip the road better while generating less heat and saving you fuel.

Wheel Diameter: This number tells you the size of the metal wheel (rim) that the tyre is designed to fit, measured in inches. Why it matters: This is a fixed measurement; an 18-inch tyre must only be fitted to an 18-inch wheel to ensure a safe, airtight seal.
Load Index: This is a numerical code that identifies the maximum weight a single tyre can safely carry when it is fully inflated. Why it matters: A rating of "103" means this tyre can support up to 875kg; it is vital to ensure your tyres can handle the total weight of your vehicle, passengers, and any cargo you might be towing.
Speed Rating: The final letter indicates the maximum speed the tyre is legally and safely capable of maintaining over a long period. Why it matters: While a "Y" rating (up to 300 km/h) is very high, choosing the correct rating ensures your tyres can dissipate the heat generated during long, hot Queensland summer drives on the highway.

Top Tip: If the numbers on the tyre are too worn to read, check the tyre placard sticker inside your driver’s door frame. It lists the manufacturer’s recommended tyre size and pressure for your specific vehicle.

Wheel Diameter & Width: This is the overall size of the rim, usually shown as something like 18 x 8.5. Why it matters: The first number (diameter) tells you which tyre size will fit, while the second (width) determines how wide of a tyre you can safely mount to ensure the best grip and look.
PCD (Bolt Pattern): The Pitch Circle Diameter (PCD) is the number of bolt holes and how far apart they are (e.g., 5 x 120). Why it matters: This is the most important "yes or no" for fitment; if the bolt holes on the wheel don't perfectly match your car’s hub, the wheel simply won't fit onto your vehicle.

Load rating: This is the maximum weight capacity that the wheel is engineered to carry safely. Why it matters: Especially for 4x4s, utes, and towing vehicles, your wheels must be rated to handle the weight of your car plus its cargo to prevent the rim from cracking or failing under pressure.
Wheel Offset (ET): Often stamped as "ET," this measurement determines how far the wheel sits in or out of your car’s wheel arch. Why it matters: Getting the offset right ensures your tyres don't rub against the suspension or stick out too far from the body of the car, which keeps your vehicle legal and safe.
